About Us

Our Mission

The Historical Records Commission promotes the preservation of historical records. Our duties include:

• making recommendations for an archive and records management program
• supporting and assisting the Sonoma County Records Inventory Project so that all County records will be identified and inventoried

• Identifying and encouraging the preservation of additional governmental, business, professional and private records deemed to be historically significant
• promoting the preservation of historical records through newspaper articles, television interviews, talks and like shows to civic groups, the preparation of pamphlets and posters, and the establishment of specialized advisory groups
• establishing and maintaining liaison with the Sonoma County Landmarks Commission
• encouraging historical and genealogical societies, professional associations, private researchers and students to participate in the detailed research involved in preserving historical records

Our History and Members

The Historical Records Commission was established by Resolution of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on December 4, 1979. It consists of five voting members drawn from the following areas: county government, library services, academics, community history, genealogical research, and business. The current commissioners are:

• Holly Hoods, Assistant Curator of the Healdsburg Museum
• Eeve T. Lewis, the Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor
• Anthony Hoskins, the Sonoma County History, Genealogy and Archives Librarian
• Dr. Daniel Markwyn, retired Professor of History from Sonoma State University
• Richard Coughlan, a Sonoma County Land Surveyor

The commission meets the first Tuesday of every month at 5:15 PM in the History and Genealogy Library of the Sonoma County Library located at Third and E Streets in downtown Santa Rosa.
